Toucan Art

We recently completed an art activity that tested our drawing skills and creative ability. Mrs Hannah showed us a step by step way to draw a toucan and we had a go at drawing one using black oil pastels. We then were able to paint our toucans using lovely, bright paints. We think they make our room look very cheerful!

Gruffalo Crumble

We enjoyed reading The Gruffalo and created some excellent written responses to the text.
Here is Xanthie’s recipe for Gruffalo crumble. What a gross combination!
Ingredients
1 Gruffalo
3 bunches of old green moss off a gum tree
5 handfuls of crumbled leaves
8 tiny dead white mice
4 striped baby snakes
2 fire ants
7 foxes
10 slimy green tree frogs
9 barrels of water

You will need
A cauldron
A big bowl
A big thick stick
A knife
A blender
A beater
A stove
A pot

Method
1. Slice up Gruffalo and beat well
2. Blend 3 bunches of old, green moss.
3. Put beat up Gruffalo and blended moss into a large bowl and leave for 20 minutes.
4. Cut off mice tails and heads, add to Gruffalo and moss mix, stir with big, thick, strong stick.
5. Pour 9 barrels of water into cauldron and boil foxes, fire ants and crumbled leaves for 10 minutes.
6. Add to Gruffalo mixture and decorate with 10 slimy frogs.
Enjoy!

Our own Commonwealth games!

Yesterday Wallsend Public School held their very own version of the Commonwealth games. Every class was given the name of a country and were asked to make flags and come dressed in the colours of their country. 2/3H were representing Scotland and we got to wear blue and white clothes.
We were able to compete in a number of sports including gymnastics, hockey, athletics, tennis and shooting and we were given points for sportsmanship and cheering.
During the afternoon each class got to march around the field and many classes performed chants as they marched. Mrs Porter’s class ended up taking the Gold ribbon in the end, but a great day was had by all!

2/3H learn about cyber safety

This term our visiting teacher, Mrs Matoka, has been teaching us about being safe whilst online. We are enjoying the cybersmart website and have been investigating ‘Hector’s World’. We’ve learnt about how to keep our online information private and clever ways to be safe on the internet.

The great egg drop

Today we finished up our unit on inventions by holding The Great Egg Drop. We were given a list of materials and we had to create an invention that would protect an egg dropped from two metres. We were marked on elements of creativity, organisation, and presentation. We also had to write about how we thought our invention would work.
We worked hard constructing our inventions and Mrs Hannah was pleased to see people collaborating and discussing their strategies. We gathered under the steps for the egg drop and witnessed some super scientists at work. We had about fourteen eggs that survived the drop and about a dozen that didn’t. We enjoyed this activity and wish we had time to go back and modify our designs- just like real inventors would!

Recycled can art

This term all of our art has had a theme of circular shapes. We created these circular flowers by cutting drink cans with scissors. We had to be very careful not to cut ourselves as the edges of the cans were very sharp. The backgrounds were done with crayons and a watercolour wash and we decorated the cans with paint and crepe paper.
We love the way they brighten our room!

Xanthie’s Amazing Artwork

Recently Wallsend Public School held a competition for students to design a library bag for our new school library. All students were asked to draw a picture that had something to do with the library or reading and 2/3H enjoyed sketching their ideas. Xanthie drew a detailed picture of children using the library and she was judged the winner of the competition.
Her design has been printed onto the new library bags in readiness for the opening of our brand new library. We look forward to seeing everyone take their bags to the library for borrowing.
What a great achievement Xanthie!

Welcome to Mrs Matoka!

Mrs Matoka is a final year education student from The University of Newcastle and she is completing her final practical placement in our classroom. She is getting to know everyone’s names and we have already had some excellent learning experiences with her. Here are some photos of us completing a fun craft activity that Mrs Matoka taught earlier this week.

Time Tables Whizzes!

Today we held our whole school times table challenge. We have been practicing our times tables for the last 5 weeks and we are all getting quite good at them. Riley, Jai, Liam, Anika, Jayden, Jacob and Dane all participated in the competition today and they did a great job whilst up on stage. Jacob was fast enough to win the Year 2 competition and Riley came 3rd place.
Congratulations to all of our tables champs!
